The Building code of Australia (BCA) proposes a set of conditions for how a building is to be constructed. There are three volumes in the BCA, however, Volume one is crucial, in that it covers the class two through nine. These classes must correspond to the section j report (SjR). The report mustagreewith the Deemed to Satisfy (DTS). Simply put, the DTS is like a manual which tells you how, where, and what to do in correspondence to buildings and constructions.
The purpose of an SjR is to administer proper energy efficiency requirements in a building. In Australia, several councils demand the SjR in order to commence with a development application. The SjR report contains eight parts and each part plays a different but important role in satisfying the needs of DTS. Part one relates to the fabric of the building, part two relates to the outer glazing and shading, part three corresponds to the sealing of the building, part four currently does not apply, part five corresponds to the ventilation and air conditioning systems, part six corresponds to the artificial lighting and power supply, part seven corresponds to the water supply, and part eight corresponds to the monitoring of the facilities.
The primary incentive for the implementation of the SjR is to curtail the greenhouse gas emissions. The concern of the global warming caused a reform to be constituted by the Australian government. And this was done to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions.
How is SjR Assessed?
Buildings are assessed using a glazing calculator to assess the complete thermal output. The thermal output should not exceed a set amount and should comply with the national goal. The ratio of the glass to walls and glass to flor is also taken into the consideration. A lighting calculator is used to assess the interior lighting and the utmost power usage. The energy consumption should meet the national goals and must meet the DTS provisions.

However, research has been conducted on the carbon dioxide emissions from building energy consumption and the results of the study suggest that the energy usage in by a building produces an equal amount of carbon dioxide into the air, and it is estimated that this exchange rate is only going to escalate in the years to come. Therefore, it is essential to work on perfecting the SjR and making sure that each building constructed meets the required criteria proposed by the DTS.
